Kigali is an absolute testament to the fact that Rwandans are some of the most resilient people there are. Atrocities and horrors ripped the country apart just over 20 years ago, but Kigali now is a city full of life, culture and happiness and also one of the more beautiful capital cities that there is.
For those wanting to track the Gorillas in the Mist of the Volcanoes National Park, relax on the sandy shores of Lake Kivu or birdwatch in the Nyungwe Forest, Kigali is the entry point to these areas and also to Rwanda, however many come to realise that Kigali is worth a visit and has a lot of charm and is a destination in its own right.
Kigali has been reborn out of the ashes of genocide, but doesn’t deny its past, a now impressive cosmopolitan city with beautiful markets and stalls and coffee houses serving a delicious morning cup, it acknowledges its history and Kigali Genocide Memorial and visitors centre is absolutely worth the trip 10 minutes out of Kigali.
Kigali’s scenic prowess is impressive, set across valleys and hills, this expanding metropolis is well managed and with direction, focus and planning for its growth as well as a high level of maintenance in the present, from banning single use plastic bags to monthly clean-up days, it’s a charming, clean and exciting capital city.
