Livingstone is named after David Livingstone, the Scottish explorer and missionary who first gazed upon the mighty Victoria Falls which are situated just 10 kilometres away. Livingstone recalled the falls as ‘scenes so lovely must have been gazed upon by angels in their flight’.
The town of Livingstone is a fantastic hub for exploration of the Victoria Falls area, with a hot semi-arid climate it is well-established as a comfortable base from which to day-trip, after all the experiences around Victoria Falls cannot be done in a day. With helicopter trips and bungee jumping around the falls, white-water rafting through the rapids below, and swimming right up to the edge of the falls from September to December, why not base yourself in Livingstone to experience the mighty power of the Zambezi and all it offers.
From Livingstone you can also head into the popular Chobe National Park on safari in nearby Botswana just over 30 minutes away, a day on safari is easily achievable where you can explore the Chobe and Linyanti river areas, sighting elephants, cape buffalo and hippopotamuses whilst exploring by Mokoro Canoe.
Wander the streets of Livingstone and explore its historic past. It is highly recommended to read up on the Livingstone Museum, the oldest and largest museum in Zambia, which is brimming with information to absorb about the history, archeology and wildlife of the local area with photographs and artefacts to enjoy.
