One of the best family-friendly resorts in the Alps, Les Gets is a popular choice especially around the peak weeks of Christmas, New Year, half-term and Easter. Many return year on year to Les Gets having fallen for its chocolate box charm, picturesque scenery with Narnia-like tree skiing and short transfer time, just an hour and fifteen minutes from Geneva.
Les Gets is found at 1,170 metres altitude, but with the majority of it’s skiing a little higher between 1,500m and 2,000m. Part of the huge Portes du Soleil ski area, offering 600 kilometres of skiing across Switzerland and France the resorts including Avoriaz, Morzine, Chatel and Les Gets. Found towards the right-hand side of the ski area, Les Gets is some distance from the likes of Avoriaz, but is perfect for providing an array of runs suited to all abilities across the Les Gets and Morzine areas. The Les Gets ski area offers fantastic skiing for all abilities on both the Mont Chery and Morzine sides of the mountain, with green, blue and red runs winding back down the mountain and easy enjoyable wide home pistes into town. There’s also a specific children’s area: Le Grand Cry, because it’s so good for families, early booking is highly recommended for peak weeks.
Whilst beginners and intermediates will be more than happy to stay around the Les Gets area, advanced skiers will enjoy blasting around the whole of the Portes du Soleil and heading towards the Avoriaz side of the domain. With the British Alpine Ski School (BASS) and Easy-learning Ski School Morzine being just two of the excellent ski schools on offer, parents can trust in their children being left in good hands. For non-skiers or when little ones legs are tired, there’s plenty more to entertain, Les Gets enjoys family plus accreditation and has a toboggan run, cinema and bowling alley, as well as many cafés and hot chocolate stops.
For adults in search of the lively side of Les Gets, Bar Bush is a popular choice, small but packing a punch, with live music and a jovial atmosphere, as well as weekly quiz night and it is open until around 2am. For a post-ski beer L’Apres Ski Bar is the best bet, perfect for a slopeside drink at the bottom of the Chavannes with live bands entertaining twice weekly.
When it comes to eating, there are lots of great options on and off the mountain, but Les Chevrelles offers one of the most beautiful views, with incredible Mont Blanc scenery, found on the Mont Chery side of Les Gets, serving typically Savoyard dishes, booking a table in advance to enjoy the view from the terrace is recommend. Back down in resort La Péla cooks up wonderful steaks alongside great service in a family-friendly atmosphere, again due to its popularity pre-booking is advised.
In summary whilst Les Gets is more family-focussed and is one of the best resorts there is for families, overall it’s well suited to anyone who is looked for enjoyable cruisy runs for all abilities, a short transfer from Geneva and a picturesque resort with a great ambience.
