Greystoke Mahale, Tanzania
4* camp
The Greystoke Mahale feels like a million miles from civilisation. It is a rugged and beautiful safari lodge nestled between the jungles of the Mahale Mountains and the white sandy shoreline of Lake Tanganyika. The lodge is not easily reached but that is part of its charm; it epitomises the feeling of African adventure in Tanzania. Guests fly into the Mahale airstrip from Arusha before taking a 90 minute Dhow boat ride on Lake Tanganyika to reach the camp.
Greystoke Mahale offers a more stripped back take on luxury; a stay focuses on the surrounding wildlife and natural environment. The accommodation is beautifully comfortable, there are six banda cottages and plenty of communal space. Each of the bandas sits on the shoreline of the lake and is spread over two storeys, they are open fronted with uninterrupted views of the lake and the top floor has a lovely relaxation deck.
The camp itself is perfect for couples, those looking for a safari holiday from the beach or in search of relaxation, there really is no other place like it. The main attraction is the wonderful chimpanzees which can be found with a trek from the lodge taking approximately 30 minutes to three hours in the Mahale Mountains. There are numerous different primates in the forest to spot alongside the chimpanzees. Meanwhile there is plenty to do on the lake as well with swimming, kayaking, catch and release fishing and Dhow trips on offer.
Whilst staying at the Greystoke Mahale, guests enjoy a fully inclusive board with all meals and drinks included. For a view like no other, the best place to be as the sun sets over the lake is the top deck above the mess area. Make sure to take a drink up to enjoy from this unique viewing point.

Our Thoughts
“There is nowhere quite like the Greystoke Mahale. Spend a morning hiking through the jungles of the Mahale Mountains, stop for an hour and watch chimpanzees play with one another, and then relax on the white sand shorelines of Lake Tanganyika before a sundowner – it is one of the most memorable experiences there is!”
