10 of the best Alps' ski-in/ski-out properties
May 21, 2020
One of the number one requests that we get when it comes to ski holidays is from guests who want to stay in a ski-in/ski-out property. For keen skiers there is no better feeling than clicking into your skis in the morning and parallel turning your way down to the lift to start your day. After an exhilarating day of exploring the pistes, being able to ski back to the boot room and to enjoy a slice of freshly baked afternoon tea or drink at the bar without having to walk around in ski boots is the ultimate in luxury ski holidays.
There are some incredible ski-in/ski-out chalets and hotels in perfect piste-side locations across the Alps, below are a selection of 10 of, in my opinion, the best ski-in/ski-out properties in the Alps.
Chalet Agate Penthouse, Verbier:
Opposite the W Hotel Verbier in the Place Centrale area of Verbier is the Agate Residence. The Chalet Agate Penthouse occupies the top two floors. Completed in 2017 this lavish 5* chalet-apartment is just moments away from the Medran ski lift. Guests can ski to and from the boot room for the epitome in ski convenience.
The Chalet Agate Penthouse sleeps 10 guests and has some outstanding balconies which look across Verbier providing wonderful views of this popular Swiss resort. The vaulted ceilings in the living room and the large picture windows fill the chalet with light and there’s also a private steam room.
Beautifully renovated for winter 2019-20, the Chalet Bambis is something of a rarity in the popular ski resort of Méribel, located in the Three Valleys ski area. Chalet Bambis is one of a small number of chalets in the resort that sits in a ski-in/ski-out position. This wonderful chalet is just above the centre of the resort, a short ski away from the Chaudanne lift area to start each day of skiing.
Chalet Bambis is a perfect family chalet sleeping eight adults and two children. There is a chauffeur service on hand should guests finish their day skiing in the Rond Point or Chaudanne areas after enjoying some aprés ski. Upon returning to the chalet there is an outdoor hot-tub and sauna to enjoy.
Chalet Chez Bugi, St. Martin de Belleville:
St. Martin de Belleville is a lesser known and traditionally French ski resort nestled between Méribel and Val Thorens in the Three Valleys. It is a charming and sophisticated resort. The Chalet Chez Bugi is the best located chalet in resort and was built as a perfect piste-side Alpine home just above the centre of the village.
Chalet Chez Bugi sleeps 12 guests and provides wonderful views from its elevated position. The chalet is home to a large wraparound terrace with an outdoor hot-tub, an indoor sauna and spacious living areas. The food and service is excellent and guests enjoy a champagne reception and a complimentary bar.
Chalet Des Cascades, Les Arcs:
An award-winning chalet, the Chalet Des Cascades is not so much piste-side but is set between the pistes. The Chalet Des Cascades is arguably in one of the best ski locations in the Alps. Accessed via the piste, guests arriving will be met by skidoo or sleigh to transport their luggage across the piste to the chalet.
The chalet is 100 metres away from the popular French resort of Les Arcs 2000 and it is an ideal spot for a group holiday or family holiday. The nearby slopes are beginner friendly, perfect for children or novice skiers. On top of the stellar location the Chalet Des Cascades has an indoor swimming pool, sauna and a floating chill out space, ideal for relaxing in the afternoons.
Chalet Le Chardon, Val d’Isère:
Situated above the centre of Val d’Isère in the Le Legettaz area of resort is one of the most in-demand group chalets in the Alps; Chalet Le Chardon. Lying just moments away from the piste and the exhilarating skiing of Val d’Isère, skiers can finish their day by skiing back to the chalet.
For those who prefer a more relaxing end to the afternoon there is a chauffeur on hand to pick guests up from elsewhere in resort. The Chalet Le Chardon is a luxury chalet through and through, from the exemplary food and service to the facilities. These include a private swimming pool, sauna and TV snug.
A short ski off-piste from the Chalet Shalimar and guests will join the home run into Zermatt. Whilst the chalet does not offer the best ski-in/ski-out access that there is it offers some of the best access available in Zermatt. A spacious 20 bed chalet that functions perfectly as one large chalet but it can also be split into an eight bed Chalet Elena and 12 bed Chalet Alex for smaller groups.
The Chalet Shalimar provides guests with mesmerising Matterhorn mountain views, light filled living areas and comfortable en-suite bedrooms. There are also two TV snugs which ensures plenty of space for all guests. The ground floor of the chalet is a dedicated wellness area which is the perfect remedy for tired ski legs. Guests of the chalet can enjoy a swimming pool, sauna and hammam, perfect for relaxing after skiing.
Chalet Tschoder, St. Anton:
Austria is not renowned for its ski-in/ski-out properties. It is a country with almost no purpose built ski resorts and therefore has few properties with ski-in/ski-out access. St. Anton is no exception to this however the Chalet Tschoder is in an enviable ski-in/ski out position.
Winner of Austria’s Best Ski Chalet 2018, the Chalet Tschoder sleeps 14 guests and is beautiful inside and out offering exceptional luxury. This freestanding chalet has wonderful views in the Nasserein area of St. Anton, there are also a wealth of facilities. These include an outdoor hot-tub, a sauna, a fitness suite and a cinema room.
In the Mont d’Arbois area of Megève located directly on the slopes is the sensational Four Seasons Megève. The hotel was new for winter 2018 and has everything from a ski concierge to a two Michelin star restaurant.
This hotel has everything that one could wish for in a ski holiday. Whether a corporate break, a couple looking for a romantic break in the snow or a family wanting a Christmas in the mountains the Four Seasons Megève is perfect. There’s an indoor-outdoor swimming pool, spa and wellness area, three restaurants, meeting spaces and Kids For All Seasons in-house childcare.
Chalet Summit View Lugano Suite, La Plagne:
Set above the piste in Plagne Centre in the popular Paradiski region of France is the Chalet Summit View Lugano Suite. This penthouse suite is part of the Summit View complex which occupies a piste-side location and consists of five chalet-apartments.
The Chalet Summit View Lugano Suite sleeps seven to 12 guests over four bedrooms including some half-price bunk beds for children and it is ideal for a group ski holiday, an extended family holiday or two families looking for utmost ski convenience. The internal lift takes guests down to the piste level where they will find the ski school meeting point and ski hire shop. There is no need to walk in ski boots when staying at the Summit View.
N.B. The Chalet Summit View Lugano Suite is no longer available unfortunately.
Not only is the Hotel L’Apogée one of the most exceptional hotels in Courchevel 1850, a resort famed for its incredible hotels and chalets. The Hotel also has a private conveyor belt taking guests from the boot room to the piste bringing a new definition to ski-in/ski-out. One of the finest 5* hotels for skiers, guests can book a ‘ski and gastronomy’ experience, visit the spa or relax in the bar or cigar lounge. The rooms and suites are beautifully decorated and there are also two chalets attached to the hotel for those seeking privacy or travelling with family or as a group.
